teaching first grade at sandy hook elementary, and she loved every moment of it. her mom says vicky loved her students more than life. always referring to them as her kids, instead of her students. she wanted to be known as a good teacher but also as a fun teacher. her students loved her. many said she was their favorite teacher. on friday, vicki died a hero. after hearing gun shots, she herded her kids into the closet and shielded them from the gunman. >> she loved her kids. she talked about them all the time with such fondness and caring. she adored them. and i have no doubt in my mind she did everything she could to protect everyone of them. >> vicki was equally passionate about her family. she was known as queen victoria at home. the ringleader who organized christmas every year. her family said she loved the beach and the new york yankees. in her obituary they write she was an amazing daughter, cousin, sister, teacher and friend, and died protecting her kids. we couldn't be prouder of our hero. her beloved dog roxie still waits every day for vicki to come home from school. >> we will

here in newtown, where you're looking at makeshift memorial, outside of sandy hook elementary school, people coming together there this evening to try to understand what happened. and try to comfort one another. our abc news team here on the ground covering it all and this evening for the first time, we're learning the names, seeing some of the faces of the young victims, all of them first graders. the medical examiner reporting a short time ago, many of them were shot at close range. and this evening, we begin with a father who lost his little girl. as you drive through this community, the signs of grief are inescapable. on the side of to road, we love you sandy hook elementary. tonight, we're hearing a father's anguish. robbie parker lost his daughter emilie. she was 6. >> teaching her how to read, dance and the simple joyce of life. her laugh was infectious. >> reporter: this evening a horrific portrait of just who the gunman targeted. in one classroom, every student but one shot and killed. 15 first graders in that one room alone lost in instant. in another classroom five of the

to renew these efforts in light of the sandy hook sentiment and i know there's just a higher level of sentiment that causes us to focus even more on what we can do locally. in fact, this higher level of sentiment, as you'll hear from the police chief, has even caused one of the highest rates of gun return. certainly we paid some money for that, but he's going to tell you there are some individuals out there, in light of sandy hook, that returned their guns and without even asking for remuneration of those guns. and he'll explain that level of detail. but it was the highest level of gun return this past weekend that we were honored to share with our community partners in making sure that we get these guns off the streets. two pieces of legislation that we are introducing to the board of supervisors with the support of our police chief, our health department, and certainly being led by supervisor cohen whose district has experienced an inordinate amount of violence throughout this year. we talk about it all the time. what can we do? for one, the ammunition that has been designed espe

to sandy hook elementary school, carrying a virtual arsenal. investigators say the gunman had hundreds of rounds of ammo with him, perhaps enough to kill every student at sandy hook elementary. the connecticut governor says when the gunman heard police arriving, he used one of those bullets on himself. massacre ending as it began, with violence and blood. we have team fox coverage with rick leventhal on today's first funerals for the victims and updates on the survivors. first, the fox report's chief correspondent jonathan hunt live at the fire house in newtown, connecticut. where does the investigation stand tonight? >> it's moving slowly, john, and it's moving methodically. there are, of course, two main crime scenes. the school itself where those 20 children, ages six and seven, and the six female staff members were all gunned down, so horrifically on friday. that crime scene is likely to remain one, according to the cops, for months to come. it will not be reopened as a school until all of the investigative work is done there, if it reopens as a school at all. the second crime scen
